Mount Sinai Health System which is one of New York’s largest hospital systems, has agreed to stop providing puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and gender surgeries to children under 18.
It now must pay an undisclosed monetary penalty and dedicate A$3-million in free medical care to those suffering harmful consequences from those interventions.
“The Department of Justice(DOJ) is committed to holding accountable medical providers that violate federal law and endanger children through so-called gender-affirming care,” Attorney General Todd Blanche said in a statement on the settlement.
“This agreement puts an end to these practices at Mount Sinai and provides meaningful relief for individuals who have already suffered harm.”
More Child Gender Patients Are Speaking Out
While the DOJ did not reveal the size of the monetary penalty, it emphasised Mount Sinai’s “multimillion-dollar commitment to detransition care.”
More Americans who underwent pediatric gender interventions have publicly rejected transgender identities and are now speaking out about the harm they suffered.
Pediatric gender interventions have faced other setbacks recently.
At least one detransitioner won a A$3-million judgment in a medical malpractice suit.
Latest High Profile Victory For Trump Administration
The settlement marks the latest in a series of high profile victories for the Trump administration in its campaign against pediatric gender interventions and the first publicly announced settlement involving a major New York hospital system.
Mr. Blanche said Mount Sinai had agreed to stop its gender treatments for minors in response to an executive order from President Trump entitled “Protecting Children from Chemical and Surgical Mutilation.”
The order directed the DOJ to investigate potential violations of civil law.
There have been similar settlements involving Texas Children’s Hospital, the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and the Connecticut Children’s Hospital.
Express Denial Of Wrongdoing
In a statement, a Mount Sinai spokesperson said a Texas grand jury in the ongoing case — which will likely go to the US Supreme Court — subpoenaed medical records of some of the health system’s patients who received gender-affirming care.
“Some have misrepresented our position and implied that the settlement means that we believe we did something wrong by providing gender-affirming care,” the statement said.
“In fact, the settlement contains an express denial of any wrongdoing on Mount Sinai’s part.”
“We entered into this settlement to protect our patients’ privacy and to allow our physicians to remain focused on our mission of serving our patients and communities with the highest-quality, world-class care.”
Mount Sinai in the past has denied any medical liability.
“Little Evidence Of Positive impacts”
A Department of Health and Human Services study found little evidence of positive impacts from sex-rejecting procedures, while other studies show they can cause harm, from increased cancer risks to a higher risk of suicidal thoughts.
“A growing number of hospitals, like Mount Sinai, have recognised the medical scandal of sex-rejecting procedures,” said Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate, who heads the DOJ’s Civil Division.
“While we are grateful when we secure resolutions to end this discredited practice and protect children, we must not and will not rest in our pursuit of justice for the victims it has left behind.”
